Course 5 Project – UbD Planner

Why do you think this unit is a good possibility for your Course 5 project?

My first reason for choosing this unit for my Course 5 project was the grade level. The grade 4 students were my students last year, so I have background knowledge on their skills. Next, the two grade 4 teachers are very open to new ideas and are very flexible with their schedules and planning to best fit the needs of their students. Lastly, our theme for this school year is Sharing the Planet, so a lot of the things we have done as a school have related to that – like our yearbook, Community Service team, and I Love to Read Month. Using this unit as a way to reach a global audience would really open a lot of doors and give a chance for students to develop a deeper understanding of the possibilities with technology.

What are some of your concerns about redesigning this unit?

I currently do not have too many concerns about redesigning this unit. Although one concern could be that we only have access to Chromebooks and there are times when the WiFi doesn’t work… but that’s a concern with many lessons as we are located in Thailand. The other concern would be time. I’ll come back to this question as I approach this unit and share the challenges we come across.

What shifts in pedagogy will this new unit require from you?

This unit will require many shifts from substitution and augmentation towards modification and redefinition. This will be a newer concept for the classroom teachers and students but will be helpful as we move forward as a school. Again, this is something I look forward to taking action on. We will try out many new sites like EdPuzzle, YouTube Playlists, Newsela, Google Classroom, continued use of Seesaw, Google Drive/Docs/Slides with the goal of adding more tools to each students toolbox. For the summative assessment, I think Canva or Lucidpress will be helpful tools in creating a newspaper article. Some students could also even use WeVideo or iMovie to create a newscast to report their articles. There are many options! Redesigning this unit will help students to practice their researching skills and sharing to a global audience.

What skills and/or attitudes will this new unit require from your students?

This unit will require patience and an open-mind, as does trying anything new! Students and teachers will need to reflect on new practices and challenge them with new ideas and questions. Students and teachers will need to be creative problem-solvers and will need to work together as a team!

Google Certified Trainer

I did it! I passed my trainer certification exam. I am so excited! It’s great to (hopefully) become a part of the Google Training community.
